2013 Youth Week

Overview

Youth Week is an international celebration of youth held annually during the first week of May. It is a week of fun, interaction and celebration intending to build a strong connection between young people and their communities and to profile the issues, accomplishments and diversity of youth across the province.

During Youth Week, young people around the world organize and participate in many activities including sporting events, musical performances, art displays, movie nights, random acts of kindness, award ceremonies, community projects displays on education and employment services and much more!

Wherever Youth Week is celebrated, the idea behind it is the same: young people are important and need to be recognized in a constructive and positive manner. Their contributions need to be acknowledged and celebrated.

Edmonton Youth Week Activities

What Are You Doing Behind The Wheel

Event date: Friday May 3 at the Royal Alberta Museum

Edmonton Police Service, CBC, City of Edmonton Youth Council, Students for Cellphone-Free Driving, Alberta Office of Traffic Safety, and other safety groups have organized a youth distracted driving awareness campaign called What are you doing behind the wheel? The main component of this campaign is a video contest amongst Edmonton and area High School students. Working with their teachers and EPS school resource officers, groups of students created their own PSA and are taking the challenge to create a buzz. These short clips created by the students will be showcased at a Red Carpet Gala full out with interviews with the film groups, a chance to get a picture on the Red Carpet and much more. Local heroes and celebrities will be in attendance to show their call to action on distracted riving.

Battle Of The Bands

Event date: Saturday May 4 at Churchill Square

This is the showcase event of Youth Week where junior and high school bands will have the opportunity to battle it out front and centre stage at Churchill Square. Prizes will go out to top votes, best originality and crowd engagement as voted by the panel of local judges. This is a great opportunity for young musicians to be in the spotlight and to invest in our local youth.

Recreation Sunday Funday

This whole day’s purpose is to grow awareness about living a healthy and active lifestyle. It is very important for youth to participate in recreation and physical activity so we are providing fun opportunities to be involved in social and physical activity.
